On the 20th of May 2016 the first official celebration of the World Day of Greek Language and Greek Culture is scheduled to be celebrated with solemn events in the Italian Diaspora. On Saturday, February 20, 2016, Fotini Vassilopoulou launched her book "For a handful of Life" at the Gavrilidis' edition premises.
The hall was packed with Fotini's fellow villagers who had come from Chrysokellaria and Kalamata as well as friends and acquaintances from Athens who attended the event.
Gregory Techlemetzis, novelist and editor of the magazine "Sisyphus" Anthoula Daniel, Dr. in Literature, writer and literary critic and the poet Sotiris Sarakis spoke about the novel.

In 2014 on the initiative of Jannis Korinthios, ex Chairman of the Federation of Greek Communities and Brotherhoods of Italy, a request was submitted to the Presidents of the Greek and Cyprus Republic and a notification to UNESCO, regarding the establishment of the World Day of Greek Language and Greek Culture.

Kalamata is in the final round for the claiming of the Cultural Capital of Europe. The Evaluation Committee chose Kalamata for the final stage, thus recognizing it’s all time endeavours.
On Friday, February 26, 2016 at 17.30, in the scheduled press conference at the Ministry of Culture, the Evaluation Committee announced the three Greek towns that were elected for the second and final round. On Monday February 22 and Tuesday February 23 the team consisting of 10 members from different sectors who have participated in activities of KALAMATA: 21 were hosted at the Maniatakeion Foundation in order to carry out the last rehearsals before the dossier nomination of Kalamata for the European Capital of Culture in 2021. The event will take place on Wednesday, February 24 in a central hotel in Athens in front of the Evaluation Committee.
