The Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO organized a coordination meeting for the protection and promotion of the Mediterranean Diet, between the member states which proposed the inscription of the element on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. On Wednesday, December 4, 2013 in Baku (Azerbaijan) the Intergovernmental Committee of UNESCO has decided to extend the Emblematic Communities for the Mediterranean Diet. The issue of enlargement began when the four countries that initially supported the inclusion of the Mediterranean Diet in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, namely Greece, Spain, Italy and Morocco, decided to include Cyprus, Portugal and Croatia as well.

How good a specific extra virgin olive oil is for your health could be easier to assess with a new Greek system to measure and rate the content of key olive compounds oleocanthal and oleacein.
Oleocanthal has anti-inflammatory effect similar to Ibuprofen and Oleacein is a powerful antioxidant, but until now they have been difficult to analyze chemically, according to Dr. Prokopios Magiatis, assistant professor of pharmacognosy and natural products chemistry at the University of Athens.
