‘St. Mark’s Lion’, the symbol of Venice from the entrance to the Church of Panagia Eleistria restored to upright position

As part of the work to landscape the Panagia Eleistria copse and church in Koroni, on Christmas Eve the Administrative Board and Commissioners of the Church of Panagia Eleistria took the initiative to raise 'St Mark's Lion', the symbol of Venice dating from the 15th century from the entrance to the church, and to re-erect it at the same location where it had lain fallen for more than 50 years.

The Maniatakeion Foundation, working together with the Koroni Municipality, the Messinia Prefecture, the Agricultural Cooperative of Koroni and the Koronian Association “Panagja I Eleistria”, prepared the proposal to have the Mediterreanean diet included in Unesco’s Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage Catalog.

The Board of Directors of the Maniatakeion Foundation decided to award prizes to all the pupils at the Koroni Lyceum in the 2008-2009 school year who attained a place at Greek universities and higher educational establishments. The prizes will be awarded the last 10 days of October at a ceremony which will be organised in collaboration with Koroni Lyceum.
